PicNic Circus 2026

The city of Vila do Conde once again hosts a distinctive celebration of contemporary circus and open-air conviviality with the fourth edition of PicNic Circus, presented by Nuvem Voadora. The event takes place on Sunday, 10 May, at the Centro de Memória de Vila do Conde, transforming its garden into a space for encounter, creation and freedom.

More than a simple picnic, PicNic Circus positions itself as an artistic and community-driven platform that brings together contemporary circus, clowning and performance within an informal and accessible setting. The invitation is clear, bring food and drinks, and wear red, embracing this colour as the defining identity of the edition, both visually and symbolically. The proposal goes beyond aesthetics, encouraging participants to actively shape the environment as part of a shared collective experience.

The 2026 edition pays tribute to the visual artist Isabel Lhano, evoking the red of her iconic hair as a metaphor for vitality, expression and presence. At the same time, this colour references the April Revolution, reinforcing a political and contemporary reading of the event at a moment when the values of freedom and participation regain urgency. There is a deliberate intention to intertwine memory, identity and artistic creation within a single gesture.

Throughout the day, the programme unfolds across workshops, installations, performances and open participation formats. In the morning, the garden hosts three intergenerational workshops, a crafts workshop led by Paula Croft focused on creating red origami lilies, the Optimix music workshop by Bitocas Fernandes, inviting participants to experiment with unconventional instruments, and Circo por Miúdos, centred on circus techniques and the development of motor skills and creativity.

In the afternoon, the focus shifts to performances. A key highlight is “Pontes em Movimento”, presented for the first time in Portugal following a residency in Vila do Conde, a collaboration between Nuvem Voadora and the Contemporary Dance Group of Guinea-Bissau, bringing together dance and contemporary circus in a meaningful artistic and geographical exchange. The programme also features “CHICo”, a solo by Brazilian circus artist Radarani Oliveira, combining aerial acrobatics, object manipulation and humour, underpinned by a strong social perspective.

The event concludes with the “Desfile dos Loucos”, a participatory moment integrating the outcomes of the workshops and inviting the audience to join a collective parade where individual expression and artistic celebration meet without hierarchy. It is precisely within this openness and the absence of formal structures that PicNic Circus defines itself, not as an event to be consumed, but as a space for shared experience.

With free entry and running continuously from 10:00 to 18:00, PicNic Circus reinforces its role as an annual gathering that connects artistic creation, community and public space, proposing an active model of participation that challenges more conventional formats of cultural programming.
